MacLenz

Privacy by design

A Mac activity tracker that keeps everything on your Mac

MacLenz records which apps and sites you use, so it is built so that nobody else can see that. Your history is saved only on your Mac. There is no account, no analytics and no cloud.

On your MacHistory and performance log live in one folder in your Library.
No accountThere is nothing to sign up for and nothing to log in to.
No analyticsNeither the app nor this website tracks you.
One requestThe only thing MacLenz sends is a Pro license check.

What it stores

Titles and times, never contents

MacLenz records which apps and websites you use and for how long, the titles of the windows and browser tabs you have open, the addresses of the pages you visit, and how your Mac performs. It never reads the contents of pages, documents, passwords or messages.

Private and incognito browser windows are saved only as "Private Browsing". All of it lives in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/MacLenz on your Mac.

What leaves your Mac

A license check, and nothing else

When you activate Pro, and once a day while you are online, MacLenz sends your license key and a random name for your Mac to the license server run by Lemon Squeezy. The request does not contain your activity, window titles or page addresses. Until you activate a license, MacLenz makes no requests at all, and the Free plan works fully offline.

One optional setting, YouTube thumbnails, loads the thumbnails of videos you watched from YouTube's image servers. It is off by default.

What it asks for

Permissions, and why

Accessibility (optional)

Lets MacLenz read window titles, such as which document is open. Skip it and apps, time and performance still work.

Automation (optional, per browser)

Lets MacLenz read the active tab's title and address. It never reads the page itself.

Notifications (optional)

Used only for the memory and busy-app warnings, which you can switch off.

Never asked for

Screen Recording, Full Disk Access, the camera, the microphone, contacts or your location.

You can delete it all

In Settings, Data, you can delete old activity or all of it. Uninstall MacLenz removes the app, its data and the permissions you gave it in one step, and it offers to export a backup first. The full details, including how the launch notice list and Pro purchases are handled, are in the privacy policy.
